After more than a year of dedicated work, Traverse Cinema Studio is thrilled to announce our latest documentary project, "Fossilist: Who Owns The Dinosaurs? Reckoning with the Golden Era of Paleontology."
At its core, "Fossilist" explores the decades-long rivalry between profit-driven fossil hunters and academic purists. As groundbreaking discoveries emerge, both sides must navigate complex ethical terrain and collaborate to usher in a new golden age of paleontology.
Our journey has taken us across the United States, from the rugged landscapes of South Dakota and Wyoming to cutting-edge research facilities in Texas and Colorado, and even to the halls of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. We've conducted in-depth interviews with passionate fossil hunters and esteemed academics, filmed at breathtaking dig sites, and gained unprecedented access to prestigious institutions.
These experiences have given us a front-row seat to the complex dynamics shaping the future of paleontology. Our cameras have captured not only the thrill of discovery but also the intense debates surrounding fossil ownership and the ethics of excavation.
The title "Fossilist" pays homage to Mary Anning, the pioneering 19th-century paleontologist who defied societal norms to revolutionize our understanding of prehistoric life. Like Anning, our film celebrates those who dedicate their lives to uncovering Earth's ancient secrets, whether they come from academic or commercial backgrounds.
As we approach the final stages of production, with just three crucial shoots remaining, we're more excited than ever to share this compelling story with the world. Our target release is set for early 2025, but we need your help to get there.
We're seeking support through donations on our website, an upcoming crowdfunding campaign, and associate producer opportunities. Every contribution helps bring this important story to life. We extend our heartfelt thanks to those who have already supported us as associate producers or future special thank you credits.
